Getting Ready To Go Camping

So you want to take your kids camping just like you did as a child with your parents of grandma or grandpa. Opps the camp ground they took you to is now condos on the lake .

Let assume you are new to camping but you have some experience as a child. You will need to become familiar with camping gear. If you have a friend that camps a lot you can go with them to learn the basics.

Ah go with a friend and show him he is smarter then me not a chance. For I would never hear the end of it.

The first thing you will need is some type of shelter for you and the kids. Then you will need some thing to sleep in a sleeping bag and something to cook with. Pots and pans portable barbecue hey I know how to use that. Already you are on the road to your first camping trip.

What Gear Do I Need?

Most first timers start out with a tent. The first tent should not be to expensive but it should provide good shelter in the wind and rain. With all the models out there spend some time looking them over do not get one that requires a masters degree in engineering to set up. Stay to the basic needs as you get more experience the tent can be given to the kids as you will upgrade to a fancy one.

Remember you are camping on a budget no use in spending thousands of dollars for all the gear only to find the wife , kids, or your self hates camping. The tent should shield you from bugs sun and the rain.

More than 600 easy to do money saving tips in the 10-Minute Tech The Book.

There are bugs our here in the wilderness so be ware. The tent should have a good screen to keep the little varmints out and yet be easy for the kids to open.

The tent will be some place to sleep and store your cloths. If the weather turns bad them the kids can play or read in the tent under supervision. It is nice to sleep under the stars but you will have to get a tent sooner or later.

So choose one that has enough room for you and the family and all the gear you will want to put in the tent while you are out swimming. Your tent should cost between 100 to 200 dollars depending on the style you pick for your family

If you want to sleep in a tent or under the stars up should have some type of padding The ground is not comfortable to sleep on. You will find padded mats made from plastic with air bubbles, vinyl cover stuffed pads and the good old air mattress.

I prefer the air mattress as it also doubles for the family to float around on the lake. If you go with the air mattress remember you will need a pump to blow them up a large foot pump works best.

Sleeping bags

If you are like most people you will be camping in the summer and early fall so do not buy a sleeping bag rated for -20 weather this will just be extra money that could be use for some thing other thing you will want.

The light rectangular sleeping bag will do If you and your spouse want to sleep in the same sleeping bag just zip them together and you will have one large sleeping bag. Do not forget your pillows but if you do roll up your towels they can make not a bad pillow.

Be sure to have at least two ground tarps at least the size of the floor of your tent. Place on down on the ground then set your tent on it. The second one may be used as a shelter above the picnic table.

Campground Cooking

All of use love the smell of food cooking outside whether it is at the camp ground or in the backyard. If you barbecue a lot at home you all ready have the basic now how to camp cook. Most public camp grounds and private camp ground will have a picnic table and a cooking pit at each camp site.

Take a portable grill with you and you will feel right at home. Pick up a gas stove and a set of pots and pans and you are ready to be a camp chef, remember a coffee pot as the nearest coffee shop may be 20 or so miles away.

Depending on you level of cooking skills you will now be able to prepare meats as if you were at home.

When shopping for gear go to the local big box store as they will carry every thing you need. Some will have tents set up if so climb in ask yourself is this roomy and will every one fit in comfortable. along with all the stuff you will take with you.

If the tents are not set up mark out a piece of the floor at home with tape this will be the same size as the floor of the tent call a family meeting and get every body to lay in the tape lines you laid down is it the right size? If not reassess your needs.

That’s it…you are that much closer to have a fun camping trip for all!

Interiors of Homes and Affects on Asthma

The inside of an asthmatic’s home is where most causes and
triggers will be, making it especially important to identify
them and minimize the effect.

Dust Mites

House-dust mites are tiny insects that live in the dust that
builds up in carpets, bedding, soft furnishings and soft toys.
Many asthmatics are sensitive to their droppings. Although they
are an unseen trigger there are practical steps you can take to
reduce their damaging affect.

Use hypoallergenic coverings on your mattress, duvet and pillows.

All carpets should be replaced with hard flooring, or tile. Your
can have small, or area, carpets which you can wash
periodically.

Vacuum often. Insure that your vacuum cleaner that has good
suction and, most importantly, a filtered exhaust that goes into
a hypoallergenic back and does not scatter the dust. Damp dust
all surfaces or use an attachment on your vacuum cleaner.

All soft toys, stuffed animals, etc., should be put in the
freezer for at least of six hours every other week so as to kill
house-dust mites. To protect the fabric you can use zip lock
bags or even cellophane.

Wash your sheets, duvet covers and pillowcases, in the hottest
water possible, at least once a week. Some people are allergic
to the feathers in pillows, however there is no conclusive
evidence showing that synthetic hypo-allergenic pillows are
better.

A dehumidifier, which dries the air, makes it difficult for the
house-dust mites to live.

Furnishings and Carpets

Any furniture or flooring that is made from press board, a
composite that is often used for shelving and furniture,
contains a formaldehyde resin that gives off a pungent,
colorless gas that can irritate the airways that can trigger
asthma symptoms.

Carpets can also be a source of formaldehyde gas left over from
the manufacturing process. If you are buying a new carpet you
should ask the shop if they could unroll and air it before you
bring it into your home or air it yourself as soon it is laid.

Keep in mind that pet allergens can linger for a long time on
furniture and in carpets and are very difficult to remove
without resorting to such a rigorous cleaning measure. Meaning
that even if you own no pets the last owner of the home,
especially if you just moved in, may have had pets. It may be
worth steam cleaning the carpets before you move in.

Heating, Bathrooms and the Kitchen

Dampness, especially from bathrooms and laundry areas, has been
linked with asthma and research has also shown that asthmatic
have more problems when in homes without central heating.

Heating a home without using “fresh” air, that is just
re-circulating the air, may be just moving the airborne dust
mites from one area of the house to another. Many doctors have
seen patients whose asthma symptoms, due to this re-cycled air,
are much worse.

Houses that have gas fireplaces, stoves or ovens have higher
levels of nitrogen dioxide. In some people with asthma nitrogen
dioxide may cause other triggers to have slightly more effect on
their symptoms.

Without adequate flues fireplaces can cause worsening of
breathing problems, compared with central heating.

Fumes from Cleaning and Decorating

Many cleaning products and solvents are used around the house
release chemicals that can cause breathing difficulties in
people with asthma. These chemicals are known as volatile
organic compounds (VOC’s). The majority of household such as
cleaning fluids, varnishes, glues and paints contain VOC’s.

When cleaning, dusting, painting or working with any solvents,
make sure that you are in a well ventilated area with the nearby
windows open.

Furniture polish, air fresheners, carpet cleaners and
dry-cleaned clothes can all trigger asthma because they contain
VOC’s.

Use solid or liquid alternatives rather than sprays if possible.

Wet paint causes problems as it’s fumes may trigger asthma
symptoms. New low-odor, water-based gloss paints are now
available that may be slightly better for some people with
asthma.

Stripping wallpaper often unsettles the dust that has
accumulated over the years,so wash down wallpaper before
starting as this may help to dampen down the dust, preventing it
from becoming airborne. Ensure there is plenty of ventilation
while working.

Consider wearing a mask during during everyday cleaning and
housework.

Building work and repairs

It is important to ensure that housing problems such as damp,
poor ventilation and inadequate heating are resolved as quickly
as possible.

There is a link between poor housing conditions and asthma.

However care should be taken as major renovation or structural
repair can cause a lot of dust and other irritant triggers.

If you are contemplating any building work within your home it
is worth seeing your doctor or nurse to check if a temporary
increase in medicine is needed.

What are the Most Common Asthma Triggers?

An asthma attack is often triggered by exposure to an allergen
of some sort - an asthma trigger. Identifying a food or
environmental asthma trigger can help you avoid it - and lessen
the risk of an acute asthma attack. While there are some people
who have food allergies or are especially sensitive to
particular things, there are some items that are well-known,
common asthma triggers. By controlling your exposure to an
asthma trigger, you can reduce the severity and frequency of
your asthma symptoms.

Dust Mites

Dust mites are one of the most common asthma triggers known.
Dust mites are tiny insects that live on sloughed off skin cells
and excrete a substance that tends to trigger attacks in many
people who have asthma. Dust mites breed and grow in mattresses,
pillows, stuffed animals, carpets, draperies - anywhere that is
soft and offers somewhere for them to burrow and hide. You can
control dust mites in your environment by using covers on
mattresses and pillows, getting rid of stuffed animals in
bedrooms, and remove carpets and draperies.

Dust

Separate from dust mites, dust itself can be an asthma trigger
because it’s a bronchial irritant. Wipe down surfaces with a
damp cloth to keep from scattering dust when cleaning, and use a
canister (or water-filtered) vacuum cleaner to avoid spewing
dust from the carpet into the air to be inhaled.

Mold

Mold spores are another asthma trigger found in many homes. To
keep the exposure to mold down, wipe down bathroom tiles
regularly with bleach or a disinfectant, dry clean laundry
immediately and reduce moisture in the air with a dehumidifier.

Cockroach Parts

Cockroach litter and parts contain an irritant/allergen that is
an asthma trigger for many children. While most people associate
cockroaches with dirt and poor housekeeping, cockroaches are
just as happy in very clean homes. Roach traps and other
insecticides can help keep the cockroach population down.

Pet Dander

Shed skin cells from pets can be one of the most virulent of
asthma triggers. If you can’t bring yourself to part with your
pet, at least keep it out of the family sleeping areas to reduce
the chance of exposure to pet dander.

Pollen

At certain times of the year, pollen can become a pervasive
asthma trigger. During hay fever season, particular if you live
in an area that also has poor air quality. Many newspapers and
radio stations publish a daily air quality rating. Make a point
of knowing when the air quality is unhealthy and avoid going
outside, or at least engaging in any vigorous activity outdoors.

Cold Air

Cold dry air can trigger an asthma attack in people who are
sensitive to it. It may be because the cold tends to dry out
bronchial tissues more quickly than warm moist air. In any case,
wearing a scarf or face mask in cold temperatures, particularly
if you’re exercising at all, can help reduce the incidence of
asthma attacks due to cold.

Exercise

Exercise can sometimes be an asthma trigger. The reason, doctors
think, is most likely that during exercise most people breathe
more quickly and shallowly, drying out lung and bronchial
tissues more quickly.

Food Allergies

Food and other allergies can also trigger asthma attacks. These
are far more individualized, though peanuts are one of the more
common. Obviously, if you’re aware of food allergies, avoiding
them can help reduce your risk of having an asthma attack.
